Gram Panchayat Geography
The geographical features of Vandoor Grama Panchayat are mainly in the eastern hilly region of Malappuram district. The topography of the panchayat can be described as follows:
1. Location
Vandur is located in Nilambur taluk of Malappuram district. Vandur is bordered by Kalikavu and Amarambalam panchayats to the east, Matiruvai and Mampad panchayats to the west, Nilambur Municipality and Mampad to the north, Amarambalam panchayat and Porur panchayat to the south.
2. Topography
Vandur can be divided into three main regions based on its topography:
Hills: There are small hills and slopes in many parts of the panchayat. The most prominent of these is Vaniyampalam Rock. This monolithic rock, which is more than 400 feet above sea level, is the main geographical landmark of the area.
Plains: Most of the settlements and agricultural areas are located in these plains.
Valleys: Low-lying areas along the banks of streams and rivers. Paddy cultivation and other water-rich crops are practiced here.
3. Soil Types
The main soil found in this area is laterite (cut stone). Red soil is found in the hilly areas and sandy soil is found in the lowlands. The soil here is suitable for cash crops such as rubber, coconut, and paddy, as well as rice cultivation.
4. Water Resources
Tributaries of Chaliyar River: Various tributaries and streams of Chaliyar River flow through the panchayat.
Streams: Several streams flowing from Pandikkad and Nilambur sides are useful for agriculture and other purposes.
Springs: The spring known as Banu Theertham in Vaniyampalam Rock is an important geographical feature. Such springs, which do not dry up even in summer, help maintain the groundwater level in the area.
5. Climate
Like other parts of Kerala, Vandoor also experiences a tropical monsoon climate.
Rainfall: The monsoon season from June to September and the monsoon season from October to November are abundant here.
Temperature: The temperature is relatively high during the summer (March-May). However, due to its proximity to the hilly region, it can get quite cold at night.
6. Agriculture
The geographical features have made Vandoor an important agricultural centre.
Major crops: Rubber, coconut, copra, paddy, banana, pepper.
In the past, this area was very famous for paddy cultivation, but now the hill slopes have mostly been converted into rubber plantations.
In short, Vandoor Grama Panchayat has a diverse landscape of rugged cliffs and fertile valleys.
